The story of a bad business leader

Along a month I’ve been helping a friend of mine on his job, so the person who hired him sent me a contract as an associate employee so I may work just for a little period. My friend was promoted as a leader and I am part of his team, it may sound funny to you but actually we are only two workers in the team. At some point the company where we are providing our services asked us for just one person to work on Sunday. Usually the company labor days go from Monday to Saturday and Sunday is the day off for all employees.

My friend asked me to work that Sunday, naturally I agreed. The week after that Sunday was a normal week working from Monday to Saturday, but the company asked again for a person to work at Sunday. Using common sense, if the team has two members in this case naturally we must share the day off so each one could rest at least one day per two weeks, but my friend didn’t want to work on Sunday because he believes he deserves all the day off because he is the leader so he ordered me to work that Sunday. I told him to think about it - “Hey buddy, it’s not fair I’ve been working for all week including last Sunday, I need to rest, please think about it” – “No Daniel, you must do what I said, you will come this Sunday period!”. I told him to think clearly because is obviously blinded because his role as a leader: -Friend, I must rest please come to work this Sunday”- he disagreed and he decided to end the conversation because it was his final decision.

I wrote an email to my boss about the situation and he agreed with me about taking a day off.

This was just a simple story about a failing mistaken leadership, business leaders should look after their team and team goals. The correct solution about working on Sunday in my case is to shift each one of us so we could rest but my friend decided to act as a dictator and not like business leader.

What was the ending of this story?

We came both of us that Sunday.

leaders must work as hard or harder than their employees to be effective leaders.
