The company mission statement - Part one

ADVERTISEMENTS

Achieving the company purpose as well as maintaining in the advance-guard with technological advances is not an easy task, sometimes we get lost on the way, there are a lot of factors to keep in mind, so is strongly recommended to clarify and identify the company Mission statement, since this will allow to draw their way and to achieve their goals.

If you ask yourself, how should I look twenty years from now? Probably, the answers to your questions work in the way of your life goals. Let’s think about the common housewife: What is the purpose of her activities that she does day by day? Any answer surely would be related to family care issues. Hence, we could ask ourselves: Why do calendars exist? Or maybe: why do political parties exist? Many of these answers could be quite complex while other simple. The truth is that all of these answers go around into a common denominator: the reason of being.

People, organizations, objects, all have a reason of being, a purpose in this life, an essence that basically distinguishes things from other things, people from other people, and organizations from other organizations.

Somehow we all dream with what we would like to be in life, and with this basis, we plot a course of action. In the same way, companies are created thinking what they want to become; they have a reason to exist, a path to follow, a main task, and a mission to achieve. Here’s how, making illusion of importance, Thomas Watson Jr., who the chairman of IBM was, define a mission statement as a “solid group of beliefs on which the company bases all its policies and attitudes.” On the other hand, Watson noted: “I consider the only important factor in the success of a company is the faithful adherence to those beliefs”

Taking into account the last paragraph, we would ask: Two companies dedicated to the same activity, would have the same mission statement? To answer this question we should consider the methodology used to formulate it.
